Bob Heeney a Child and Youth Worker from Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, spoke to the Port Perry Rotary Club on February 19th about the stigma associated with mental illness.  Bob chairs the T.A.M.I. (Talking About Mental Illness) coalition in Durham Region which is a program to educate elementary and high school students on mental illness. Many suffer in silence afraid to seek out support, due to the stigma still surrounding mental illness.  Education is key to eliminating stigma and promoting early intervention.  Expanding this program to College and University students would serve to reach young adults in their most vulnerable years as they transition to post secondary education.
